Nelson Piquet apologizes to Lewis Hamilton, but denies using a racial slur

 Statement from Nelson Piquet

Nelson Piquet released the above statement in response to the media's reaction to his use of a racial slur directed towards Lewis Hamilton in an interview from 2021.

The 7-time world champion, Lewis Hamilton, condemned Piquet's comments, stating "It's more than language. These archaic mindsets need to change and have no place in our sport," he said. "I've been surrounded by these attitudes and targeted my whole life. There has been plenty of time to learn. Time has come for action.

Formula 1 and the FIA have faced a lot of pressure from the media on their responses to Piquet's comments. Both released statements condemning racist and discriminatory language and behavior, however both failed to mention Piquet or to address the issue directly.

Nelson Piquet has been banned from from the paddock as a result of his racist comments, however at this time it is unknown whether this is a lifetime ban or not.
