Canadian GP Debrief: Finishing Order

DNF: Sergio Perez

Suffered a gearbox failure on lap 8 resulting in a virtual safety car allowing his teammate to make an early switch from mediums to hards, dropping only to third. Hearbreak for Checo just as his own championship bid came alive.

DNF: Mick Schumacher

Experienced a Power Unit failure on lap 20 after running competitively in the top 10.

DNF: Yuki Tsunoda

Had a unique collision with the barriers on pit exit on lap 49, making poor use of the impressive 2.4s stop offered by the pit crew. The resultant safety car allowed several cars to pit with minimal losses.

P17 Kevin Magnussen

After contact with Hamilton on the opening laps, KMag was forced to pit with resultant front wing damage. This dropped him far behind the pack and unable to capitalize on the vsc from Perez's failure.

P16 Nicholas Latifi

King Latifi had a disappointing home GP.  By managing to not DNF and have a better pit strategy than Magnussen, he keeps his p16 streak alive.

P15 Lando Norris

McLaren seemed to struggle at this circuit.  Unable to put the car far up the order on Saturday, Norris was tasked with cutting through the field during the GP.  However, the McLaren just didn't have the pace to overtake cars on track, and for good measure both drivers had abysmal pitstops.

P14 Pierre Gasly

Gasly struggled for grip the entire GP even gambling with pitting on the 8th lap for hards.  However, they would not last the entire race requiring another pit later on.  Difficult day for the Red Bull sister team.

P13 Alexander Albon

After competitive opening laps and a compelling battle with Bottas, Albon eventually ceded too many positions leaving Williams pointless again.

P12 Sebastian Vettel

Vettel pit early on the same lap as Gasly but was unable to take advantage of the Tsunoda safety car later on, leaving him uncompetitive late in the race and outside of the points. Unfortunate given the promise seen in FP3.

P11 Daniel Ricciardo

Though lacking for pace to the cars ahead, DR3 would likely have held on to the last points position if he too hadn't been compromised by a botched pit stop.

P10 Lance Stroll

Stroll went long on the hard tires, then switched to mediums during the Tsunoda safety car.  This allowed him to walk past a struggling Ricciardo on older hard tires.

P9 Fernando Alonso

Alonso was unlucky with safety cars and was unable to capitalize on his incredible qualifying performance.  Alpine seemed a step behind with his strategy, and for good measure he experienced clipping with the power unit intermittently.  For double good measure he received a post race 5s time penalty for weaving on the straight.  This weaving kept a surging Bottas behind, but the penalty dropped him behind both Alfas.

P8 Zhou Guanyu

Luck finally seems to have gone Zhou's way.  He and the team were able to put together a comprehensive weekend with clean qualifying, strategy, and race pace.  Double points for Alfa for the first time since the opening race keeps them in contention with Alpine over P5 in the constructors championship.

P7 Valtteri Bottas

Bottas went long on hards and pit during the Tsunoda safety car.  Both Alfas seemed to be lacking speed on the straights, with both drivers having extended battles with the Williams of Albon and the Aston of Stroll. After the failings of Monaco and Baku, Alfa hopes to be pushing forward with inspiration from Sunday's results.

P6 Estaban Ocon

Ocon exhibited the Alpine's speed well but was unable to meaningfully defend from the Mercedes of Hamilton.  This further compromised Alonso's race as the former champion hoped his teammate could keep the Mercedes behind allowing him to pit and rejoin ahead of Ocon.

P5 Charles Leclerc

Leclerc went long on hards after starting from the back of the grid due to his engine penalty.  The vsc hampered his progress and compromised his pit strategy.  Poor grip saw him struggle to overtake the freshly tired Alpine of Ocon in the closing stages of the race.

P4 George Russell

Following early battling with the Alpines, Russell found himself in a bit of a race of his own, with decent gaps ahead and behind.

P3 Lewis Hamilton

Hamilton had decent battles with Alonso and did his best to hang on to the top two cars.  Trademark race-craft and masterclass pit stops by the team allowed him to make it back on to the podium.

P2 Carlos Sainz

Sainz was able to jump Alonso fairly early on and spent the rest of he race trading P1 with Verstappen due to pit strategy. Sainz did his best to hunt down the Red Bull but was let down by his tires.

P1 Max Verstappen

Max drove a very clean race.  Following the safety car restart on lap 55, he absolutely controlled the race.  Sainz was certainly applying pressure, but Verstappen responded like you'd expect from the reigning champ.  Strategic defense with the battery pack and being generally unbothered by Sainz's pressure allowed Max to bring home the win.
